The Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Hartford (JCF): JCF brings donors and grantees together to support and enhance Jewish life in Greater Hartford and throughout the world. We promote Jewish philanthropy, provide support and assistance to Jewish organizations throughout our community and assist our donors in fulfilling their philanthropic dreams and wishes.  Since our founding in 1972, the Foundation has grown to more than $120 million in assets under management with more than 1,100 individual donor and organizational funds.  More than just a steward of the community’s endowment, the Foundation today is on the cutting edge of innovative grant making and, with its community partners, seeks to identify and solve the community’s most pressing challenges – and make the world a better place.
 

Position summary: Reporting to the President and Chief Executive Officer, the Vice President of Philanthropy is responsible for all fundraising and development activities of the organization.  The individual serves as a key leadership team member and an active participant in making strategic decisions impacting the Foundation.
 

The Vice President of Philanthropy is responsible for developing, sustaining and expanding relationships with current and new donors and community partners in order to generate and secure charitable gifts, build confidence and trust in the Foundation and ensure donor satisfaction with Foundation services and programs.  S/he will expand and diversify the Foundation’s donor base, build an active pipeline of prospective donors, systematically and effectively strengthen the organization’s fundraising capacity and work with other team members to secure endowment funds for key programmatic initiatives. 
 

The Vice President of Philanthropy is responsible for articulating a vision and implementing a plan for the Foundation’s development activities and managing the Foundation’s development team.  S/he will also be called upon to create new and innovative programs that facilitate the Foundation’s efforts to connect with donor segments not currently engaged with the Foundation.
 

Responsibilities:

Design and Implement Development Strategy:

  • Work with the management team to identify needed funds, preferred funding targets and approaches.
  • Create and implement a comprehensive development plan with measurable goals and results.
  • Design and implement effective strategies and methods for engaging Board and Committees in prospect cultivation.
  • Direct Foundation sponsored programs aimed at nurturing community relationships and advancing a culture of endowment giving across the community, including legacy campaigns.
  • Work closely with professional advisors and their clients to promote the value of partnering with the Foundation and assist in the creation of gift plans.
  • Keep informed of developments in philanthropy, gift planning and estate and tax laws, and report to leadership and staff on trends affecting charitable gift planning.
  • Work with the Director of Marketing to develop materials for increasing the awareness of the Foundation as a vehicle for philanthropic support.

Fundraising:

  • Identify, cultivate, solicit and manage a portfolio of top prospects and donors in order to secure major endowment gifts
  • Build a robust database of donor prospects with a focus on expanding and diversifying the base of existing donors.
  • Coordinate the work of the CEO and other staff (as appropriate) in soliciting donors and/or building and stewarding donor relationships.
  • Create customized cultivation strategies for major donors and effectively manage donor prospect identification and cultivation tracking tools (“moves management”).
  • Oversee and enhance donor stewardship efforts.
  • Build a robust Legacy program.
  • Design new and innovative giving plans to connect younger generation donors and other unaffiliated donors to the work of the Foundation.
  • Create strategies for managing, expanding and energizing existing giving circle programs (such as the Lillian Fund and JewGood Hartford) as a tool for donor engagement and effective grant making.

Other:

  • Train, mentor and manage development staff, volunteers and Board members in the development process.
  • Communicate and raise awareness within the organization of fundraising goals, strategies and progress.
  • Manage the development “dashboard” with appropriate metrics to measure the progress of the organization’s development efforts.
  • Enhance and expand programming and services offered through Foundation’s Family Philanthropy Institute
  • Oversee a series of educational programs for families who have created or are prospects for establishing philanthropic funds at the Foundation

Qualifications:

  • 7 + years of professional development experience in a non-profit organization; demonstrated success in a development function (managing and forging relationships and closing major gifts).
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal; the ability to create powerful, compelling presentations (written and verbal) and to engage in energizing and motivating conversations with a wide range of donors.
  • The ability to form visionary strategies to help donors achieve their philanthropic goals.
  • A creative and entrepreneurial approach to development and a willingness to embrace new ideas and approaches.
  • Strong organizational and management skills and a flexible, adaptable personal style.
  • A high degree of energy and a passion for non-profit work.
  • Experience with philanthropic foundations (particularly community or Jewish communal foundations) is desirable, but not required.
  • Bachelor’s degree required, Masters preferred.
